My Own Website
Today you will be creating your own website using Google sites. People use websites to share and gain information for many purposes, whether it be for school, for work, or for fun. Think of a website you would like to create (maybe a fan website for your favorite musician, television show, actor, or movies; use your website to share information on a subject you are an expert on like sports or cooking) and begin working on your website.
Here are some examples of websites created by Ms. Hernandez on Google sites:
Teen Urban Fiction Pathfinder
Middle School Learning Commons
Use the Google sites editor to make sure your website has these things:
**TIP: MAKE SURE TO CLICK SAVE WHEN EDITING YOUR PAGES! OR ELSE YOU WILL LOSE YOUR CHANGES!**
1. A home page
2. A navigation bar
3. At least 5 webpages
4. Interesting and relevant text and pictures.
5. At least two videos
6. At least three gadgets
**TIP: MAKE SURE TO CLICK SAVE WHEN EDITING YOUR PAGES! OR ELSE YOU WILL LOSE YOUR CHANGES!**
Once you have completed your website, post a link of your website to the blog. Then, take a look at the websites of your classmates and post a comment about their website on the blog.

3. Choose a pre-created template for your site or a blank one to create your very own.
4. Choose a theme, or borders and colors to go with your site.
5. Choose an appropriate name for your website. Enter the code at the bottom. If the name has been already taken, make up a new name.

Your Favorite Websites and Voicethread
One way to use Voicethread is to teach people something new. Take a look at some of the VoiceThread tutorials and the Voicethread tutorial below:
http://voicethread.com/share/772754/
Today, you are going to show viewers of your VoiceThread your favorite website. Make sure you highlight:
1. Web Address or url
2. How to get around, the menu
3. What is the content of each page
4. How this part of the website is helpful to your viewer
Here are the steps to create your Website Tutorial on VoiceThread:
1. To create your VoiceThread, start with a text document on NeoOffice.
2. Choose a website you would like to share and show Ms. Hernandez.
3. Take screenshots of the website. To do this press the APPLE KEY, SHIFT KEY, and 4 KEY together. Your cursor should change into crosshairs. Select the part of the desktop you would like to copy. This screenshot will be saved on the desktop.
4. Place these screenshots in your NeoOffice document and write up your script for each screenshot.
Use VoiceThread to create your project after showing your outline to Ms. Hernandez.
Tips: Don't forget that you can use the Doodle function on VoiceThread to create your tutorials.

Hear My Story with Voicethread!
Have you ever viewed a PowerPoint or slideshow presentation before? Slideshows are usually presentations of pictures with or without text about a certain subject. Take for example, the slideshow below that I created about me:
This slideshow has many images, but what's missing? That's right, this presentation is silent and potentially boring!
One way to create lively and exciting presentations is by using VoiceThread. Get to know VoiceThread by watching this presentation about Denmark:
Today you are going to explore VoiceThread and begin creating a VoiceThread project that explains all about yourself.
1. Think of 6 words that you use to describe yourself. They can be adjectives or nouns. For example: books, girl, smart, musical, fantastic
You can even use a thesaurus to help you. Make sure you click on "thesaurus" before you type in you word.
2. Find 6 images or pictures from Flickr Creative Commons, Wikimedia, MorgueFile, NASA's Image Gallery, or Trek Earth that will help you portray that word.
For example, for the word "FANTASTIC" I could choose this photo:

3. After choosing your 6 photos that match with your 6 words. You will write an explanation of why that word describes yourself.
Share your completed VoiceThread storyboard with your neighbor and Ms. Hernandez. After completing this storyboard, she will create your VoiceThread identity and you will begin creating your very own VoiceThread!

Fun with Photos: Image Chef and Comic Strip Generator
Today we will continue exploring creativity with images.
Use Big Huge Labs to create a trading card of your favorite sports, music, or political celebrity. Find a photograph of your celebrity from Flickr or Google Images. Include a list of that celebrity's "powers" and any of their awards or accomplishments.

Include this trading card in your blog post today of your projects.
Check out the very fun and addicting Image Chef! Create a project of your choice and include it in your post. Think about how you could use this image generator for school and for home. What projects could you create for school? What projects could you create at home?
Had enough fun, yet?! Take a look at the Comic Strip Generator where you can take a picture to make your own comic! Make a comic and post it in your blog.
DON'T FORGET TO TAG YOUR POSTS WITH YOUR learning blog name!

Fun with Photos: Flickr and Big Huge Labs!

Does you and your family own any of those old family albums, where family pictures are saved and shared among relatives and friends? Nowadays pictures can be shared not only physically, but digitally and online as well! Today we will be experimenting with Flickr, an online image hosting site. Think of Flickr as a public album of photos and images that everyone can share! People all over the world upload and share their images on Flickr, which means that there are thousands of photos to view there.
Take a look at Flickr. Take the tour and write up a blog with "Flickr" in the title that answers these questions:
1. What is the coolest thing about Flickr? Why?
2. How could you use Flickr? One idea is to post and share pictures of your family vacation. Have any others?
3. Choose an image from Flickr and post it in your blog post. Tell us why you chose the image.
After checking out Flickr, go to Big Huge Labs. Create any of the projects or "toys" using an image you own or one from Flickr. Post this into your blog!

Cyber Safety and Netiquette
Welcome to the Media Technology course blog for King Visionaries Winter 2010! This blog will serve as our collaborative space to consider, share, and develop all of the ideas and skills we will learn in this class. Many of the technologies we will be exploring are located on the Internet (this blog is obviously one of them!). You may familiar with using the Internet to find information, communicate with friends and family, and play games. The Internet opens up the world and everything in it to us. This cyber world, like the real world, includes some of the world's dangers. This is why it is important that before we begin our learning journey we must know how to behave safely and respectfully online.
Listen to the presentations on cyber saftey and netiquette. Practice what you have learned by following the rules I talked about and answer these questions by commenting on this post:
1. Looking back at the 3 rules for posting and the slide on Netiquette, which rule do you think is most important and why?
2. Did you learn a new tip from these presentations and discussions? If yes, what new safety tip will you use? If no, how did you learn how to be safe and respectful cyber citizen?
